How do I help my kid with math? If you have questions like this you’re not alone. The good news is there are some easy solutions to helping your kid with math. Let’s look at 5 solutions.
1) Be positive about Math
Have a supportive attitude towards mathematics with your child. When they see your attitude towards math is a good one, they will want to have a good one too. Celebrate your child’s achievements in math no matter how big or small. Even celebrating success with just one problem can lead towards greater success.
2) Ask questions about Math topics.
Reading homework problems aloud with your child can help your student better understand how to solve a problem. Walking through the problem step by step. If your child continues to struggle daily, be sure to reach out to your child’s math teacher about how you can better help them understand or if something is missing information.
3) Watch videos for support.
There are many resources for math online. Search for examples on YouTube of a math topic or skill. Look for math content on TeacherTube also. Sometimes it helps to see another way of solving or another person explaining a topic to really understand it better.
4) Practice math skills daily.
Help your child at home by setting a timer for 30 minutes or less to complete a worksheet. This helps them get in the habit of focusing and completing the task at hand. We spend a lot of time in the car. Exercise math skills in the car with flash cards for addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. This helps kids build up their fluency skills and improve their math skills too.
5) Play games.
Games are always a good choice. Have a family game night with your child. We always do family game nights on Thursday. One child gets to pick the game we all play at the dining room table after dinner. Some good ones are: Battleship, Dominoes, Monopoly or Monopoly Junior, Sequence, SKIPBO, and UNO. Make memories with your kids and help them build problem solving skills. This will help them greatly in math.
