The Summer Slide is a Problem
What is the Summer slide? The Summer Slide is also know to many as the Summer Learning Loss that happens every Summer when school is out of session. It’s the loss of educational time with a professional teacher for a two to three month period. This results in students losing educational learning gains and regressing up to half a school year.
Just this Summer, children will lose up to 34% of prior year’s learning gains during the break. This is the result of the summer learning loss. It is a well-known effect of the Summer break. As a result of the Summer learning loss, teacher will spend up to 6 weeks in the Fall re-teaching skills that students have forgotten over the Summer.
Stop the Summer Slide
Here are three ways to stop the Summer slide from happening to your students. First, have students read for 20 minutes every day, give them a review key grade levels math skills to use every day, and encourage kids to spend time outside without electronics. These simple solutions will add up to less learning lost in September.
